Despite his misgivings about the sleeping arrangements, Mr Collins waxed lyrical about the house and all its furnishings. “Such exquisite pieces. Such refined taste you have, Mrs Bennet,” he cried. She smiled warmly, but her smile faded as he continued. “And do these come with the house itself, or …?”

“You’ll find these belong to my wife, Mr Collins,” said Mr Bennet. “Some of them she brought with her on her marriage and others her brother in London sent her as various gifts over the years. But there is a very fine, though threadbare, couch in my study I am sure you will like. It’s even a little comfortable if one is mindful to avoid the holes. That will certainly come with the house when the time comes for you to take possession of it.”

Mr Collins blushed and stammered at being caught so openly in assessing his future gains. Mr Bennet grinned, enjoying his discomfort until Mrs Bennet stepped in.

“Tea,” she said, with a firm look at her husband.
